Tennessee High School lacrosse began in 1989 with two programs: The McCallie School (coached by Hank Lewis) and Germantown High School (coached by David Gearhardt). McCallie found competition to the east while Germantown traveled to St. Louis for its games. The two programs met in Chattanooga during May of 1989 and McCallie won the first state title. CBHS, MBA, and MUS formed teams in 1990, and MUS won its first state title in a 4 team round robin tournament held in Memphis.
Since the beginning stages, the state has added new teams each year, and the sport of lacrosse has grown significantly throughout the state at both the high school and youth levels. The Tennessee Scholastic Lacrosse Association (TSLA) was formed in 1993 and is currently the governing body of Tennessee High School Lacrosse.
